Abstract

Abstract

Extract of Cassia alata L. known to contain several secondary metabolites such as resins, saponins, phenols, flavonoids, anthraquinone, glycosides and alkaloids which have antifungal and antibacterial effects that are useful in the manufacture of herbal soap. The aim of this study was toformulatethe ethanolic extract of Cassia alata L.into herbal bar soap form. The extraction process used maceration method with 96% ethanol as solvent. The herbal bar soap were made with various concentration of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) of 15%, 20% and 25%. Evaluation parameters were the organoleptic test, the foam stability test and pH test. They were done once a week at room temperature for 4 weeks period.

The results showed that ethanolic extract of Cassia alata L.could be made intobar soap with VCO concentrations of 15%, 20% and 25%. The herbal bar soaps were solid, have scented rose oil, coloured of brownish green and pH-value of 11 that met the standards of the skin safety. These four parameters were stable during 4 weeks of storage. The higher concentration of the VCOresulted the higher of bar soap’s foam.
